Kiyoshi Mio-USA TODAY Sports - BREAKING: Flyers Place Struggling Goalie on Waivers

The Flyers have placed goaltender Cal Petersen on waivers.

It is thought that Felix Sandstrom will be recalled from the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, after a roster spot was freed up by the team placing Jamie Drysdale on the Injured Reserve (IR).

Petersen has been backing up rookie Sam Ersson ever since Carter Hart took a leave of absence and was moved to non-roster in the wake of his involvement with the 2018 Hockey Canada sexual assault investigation.

While Ersson has arguably been the better goalie out of the three of them this year, with a 17-11 record and a .901 SV% in 33 games, head coach John Tortorella has stated multiple times that giving the Swedish rookie proper rest time is paramount after he unexpectedly got thrown into the No. 1 goaltending spot.

Petersen has featured much less consistently at the NHL level, with a 2-2 record in four games started and a .864 SV%, and his most recent outing against the Pittsburgh Penguins left fans with little faith in Petersen's abilities at the NHL level.

The Flyers fell 7-6 in Pittsburgh, and viewers expressed frustration at Petersen's positioning, awareness, and several other aspects of his game that led to the Penguins getting a touchdown past him. The overwhelming opinion was clear: Petersen wasn't cut out for the top level.

The Flyers continue to search for their franchise goalie, along with a solid No. 2 to back him up.
