The fans might not know anything, but at least the players do!
As the trade deadline approaches, all eyes are on the Flyers to see what moves the front office will make by March 8.
It's been pure speculation up to this point—coaches, players, and front office executives have not given many indications as to who stays and who goes. Names have popped up on trade bait lists, fans have tweeted out who they'd like to see get brought in, but it's all just guesswork to those of us on the outside looking in.
There have been plenty of frustrations surrounding the lack of tangible information surrounding what moves the Flyers could be making. There has been no shortage of hypothetical situations to make up for fans not being privy to the inner workings of Danny Briere's mind, but the reality is that those outside of the organization just don't (and won't know) until a deal is officially announced.
Head coach John Tortorella made it clear that the people that do know what's going on with the Flyers' trade deadline plans are the players themselves.
"I've already talked to the players that could be moved. They know," he said during practice on Feb. 19. "I asked Danny if I could talk to them...The whole team knows where we stand. That's just showing respect. I've seen it happen in other organizations where people are talking about you, but no one's really talked to you within the organization then, bang, you're moved. Players know where they stand. There's always an open door if they have other questions about it. We are totally transparent."
This brand of transparency with players is a hallmark of the new front office regime, who have been committed to not just rebuilding (no pun intended) the connection with the team and the fans, but also strengthening the trust and connection between the executives and the team itself.
Tortorella reiterated this sentiment by saying, "I want to show them as much respect as I possibly can and not have something sprung on them. Myself, [Keith Jones], and Danny have all been very transparent with the group leading up to this deadline [about] where we sit as far as the organization."
