After the Nashville Predators signed Juuse Saros to an eight-year, $61.92 million contract extension, top goalie prospect Yaroslav Askarov, understandably, asked for a trade. Because of this offseason, Askarov was viewed as a prime trade target for the Philadelphia Flyers for much of this offseason.

Now, it turns out that the Flyers did, in fact, have a serious interest in Askarov.

According to NHL insider Pierre LeBrun, the Flyers were among the frontrunners for Askarov before he was eventually dealt to the San Jose Sharks. Per LeBrun, the Carolina Hurricanes, Colorado Avalanche, and Montreal Canadiens were the other clubs making serious offers for the rising star.

LeBrun did not specify what the Flyers' trade offer for Askarov was, but it is apparent that they wanted to add him to their system. It is understandable, as they have some questions when it comes to their goaltending.

Heading into the 2024-25 season, the Flyers have Samuel Ersson and Ivan Fedotov as their goalie tandem. While both goalies have the potential to be impactful, Askarov's ceiling is viewed as being higher. Had the Flyers landed him, he could have been a long-term answer between the pipes for the Metropolitan Division club.

Askarov was selected by the Predators with the 11th overall pick of the 2020 NHL Entry Draft. In three career NHL games, the 22-year-old has a 1-1-0 record, a 2.58 goals-against average (GAA), and a .914 save percentage (SV%). During this past season with the Milwaukee Admirals, he had a 30-13-1 record, a .911 SV%, and a 2.39 GAA.
