In a matter of only days, Philadelphia Flyers star Matvei Michkov has won his court case against a Dubai car rental company that illegally seized his passport and attempted to extort him for $100k.
According to his lawyer for the case, Shuk al-Katiri, Michkov will receive his stolen passport after the courts ruled in his favor Thursday.
"Today, the court ruled in favor of our client, obliging the company to return the passport, which was illegally seized, to Matvei Michkov. No one has the right to keep anyone's personal documents,” al-Katiri told TASS. “The actions of the car rental company were not only illegal, but also unjustified in relation to our client, and this court decision serves as a reminder that the UAE legal system uncompromisingly opposes any such violations.”
For those unfamiliar with the story, Michkov, 20, was the passenger in a single-car accident while on vacation in Dubai last week. The rented BMW vehicle was operated by a friend of Michkov's, and no injuries were reported.
Erroneous reports surfaced suggesting significant legal action against Michkov and his friend, among other things, but this was and has now been proven to be completely false.
The Flyers' Russian star is said to have already left the United Arab Emirates and will now go about his offseason with his passport back in his possession.
