This defender was signed to be a mentor to the other young Philadelphia Flyers defenders.

The Philadelphia Flyers added a win to their record yesterday to improve to 12-10-2. Their next game is tomorrow, once again against the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Marc Staal.Marc Staal.

The Flyers won a somewhat dramatic shootout game. There were back and forth chances and ultimately Sean Couturier's goal in the shootout - plus Sam Ersson's save on Sidney Crosby - won them the game.

Although they needed extra time to decide the game, one Flyers defender only logged 11:23 of ice time.

Since returning from injury Marc Staal has only skated more than 14 minutes in one game. Last night he saw his minutes decline for a second straight game.

He has a reasonable cap hit having signed a $1.1-million one-year deal this past off-season. With that in mind, there has to be a playoff team willing to take on his contract.

They could leverage Staal to acquire a decent prospect or draft pick. Additionally, there are probably some veteran defenders they could acquire who would do more on the ice in addition to fulfilling the mentor role.

If they wanted to stay in house they could retain Sean Walker instead of trading him. He hasn't been around for as long as Staal, but his experience is valuable non the less.
