Gardner is likely to serve as a depth piece with the Flyers and Phantoms.

Soon after signing forward Ryan Poehling to a one-year contract, the Philadelphia Flyers inked another forward to a deal.

Saturday afternoon, the Flyers agreed to terms with Rhett Gardner on a two-year, two-way contract, which carries an annual cap hit of $775,000.

Gardner, 27, spent all of the 2022-23 season playing for the Texas Stars of the American Hockey League. He posted 10 goals and 40 points in 71 games.

Gardner was selected by the Dallas Stars in the fourth round (No. 116 overall) of the 2016 NHL Entry Draft. To date, he has logged two points — a goal and an assist — in 40 NHL games.

The Moose Jaw native played collegiate hockey at the University of North Dakota, where he registered 34 goals and 74 points in 149 games.

Listed at 6-foot-3 and 225 pounds, Gardner is a strong, physical forward with potential penalty kill upside. At North Dakota, he was named the 2017-18 NCHC Defensive Forward of the Year.

Expect Gardner to compete for a role with the Phantoms in Lehigh Valley.
