The Flyers have had some much-needed rest time after starting off their 2024-25 season with back-to-back games, and some lineup reshuffling could help the team regain some momentum against the winless Oilers.
Flyers fans can't seem to get enough of young center Jett Luchanko, who has thoroughly impressed audiences throughout the summer, so much so that he became the youngest player to ever debut for the Flyers with his inclusion in the Opening Night roster against the Vancouver Canucks.
His current contract allows him a nine-game "audition" before the Flyers brass must decide to keep in the NHL or send him back down to juniors, so they're being strategic in how they distribute his playing time, but his fresh legs will certainly be welcome—especially since a few guys have been feeling "banged up" after the back-to-back games.
The Oilers have gotten off to a surprising start this season, going 0-3-0 in their first three contests. Last year's Stanley Cup finalists are in frustrating form and, as many fans know all too well, it's teams in this position that can be the hardest to play against.
Even with a couple of recovery days, the Flyers will likely still be feeling the fatigue that comes with such a long road trip at the very beginning of the season. They've shown that they have no problems keeping up the energy across 60 minutes (thanks to John Tortorella's skating drills), but they've still been contending with a grueling travel schedule straight out the gate. They'll have to start digging deep to finish out this stretch on a high note.
The Flyers have some truly exciting players up front, and while they've enjoyed goals from the likes of Tyson Foerster, Cam York, Travis Konecny, and Joel Farabee, the familiar frustration of the Flyers getting good chances but not always capitalizing.
While Sam Ersson, who will get the start in net tonight, has shown that he is more than capable of keeping the Flyers in a game, it would do wonders for the team's confidence to prove that they can be dangerous going forward. The talent and skill are undeniably there, and once the finishing starts happening more consistently, the team will be taken to a whole new level of fun to watch.
