Although a lot of attention has been focused on who the Philadelphia Flyers might add to the organization through the upcoming NHL Draft, but there are still a few names floating around the trade rumor mill that the Flyers could take interest in as well—one of them being Carolina Hurricanes forward Martin Necas.
Although a lot of attention has been focused on who the Philadelphia Flyers might add to the organization through the upcoming NHL Draft, but there are still a few names floating around the trade rumor mill that the Flyers could take interest in as well—one of them being Carolina Hurricanes forward Martin Necas.
Currently a restricted free agent (RFA) on a $3 million salary, recent signs have pointed to him actively looking for a way out of the Hurricanes (his own father suggested as much in an interview). Currently playing with Team Czechia in the Men's World Championship, the six-foot-two forward might be packing his bags again when he returns stateside—and the Flyers should look into making his destination Philadelphia.
Necas is a big center who can put up a respectable amount of points and is confident that he can be a first line player. He recorded 53 poins (24 goals, 29 assists) in 77 games during this past regular season, along with nine points (four goals, five assists) in 11 games during the 2023-24 playoffs.
At 25 years old, Necas would be a perfect fit for the young core the Flyers are building the team around, and possesses an abundance of skills that would take the Flyers' offense above and beyond. He's a physical player that's not afraid to make hits and scrap in the corners for the puck, but he also has a missile of a shot, can win faceoffs, and can zoom around the ice with the fastest skaters in the league.
That being said, Necas will certainly not come cheap. If he does start shopping around for another team, the Flyers will not be the only ones interested. A player of his age and caliber would likely cost a couple of the Flyers' young forwards, and probably a draft pick or two. Not to mention that any deal he signs would most likely hover around $8 million (but maybe Flyers CEO Dan Hilferty will be willing to pay that out of pocket too?)
It'll be expensive, but by all accounts, it will be worth it. Necas has a high upside that would meet the needs of the Flyers' offensive vision, and—not to get too ahead of ourselves, but this is a trade rumor, so we can dream—as pointed out in other reports, could even form a "line that could rival the famed Legion of Doom" with top-liner Travis Konecny (should the Flyers extend his contract) and projected Flyers hockey savior Matvei Michkov (whenever Michkov does actually join the organization).
There hasn't been any movement on the Necas front as of now, but it is definitely a move the front office should seriously consider.
