The 2023-24 season was one full of achievements for the Philadelphia Flyers' Travis Konecny—he was named as an alternate captain, represented the Flyers at the 2024 NHL All-Star Game, finished as the team's leader in goals, assists, and overall points, and received the Flyers' Bobby Clarke Trophy, an award given to the team's MVP.

Despite a stellar campaign, Konecny admitted that he isn't focusing on his individual season—nobody on the Flyers is—and is instead joining his teammates in focusing on what the group can do to improve for next season.

"I think it was a good season," he said. "I think it's hard right now because you just look at it as you ended on a bad note. It's been a little bit since I've been in a position to potentially be in the playoffs. We felt really good about this group, so that's all we're looking at right now. I don't think anyone's doing any individual evaluations. Right now, you're just trying to figure out what we can do for next year, get ready to get back to work this summer and come back excited again."

One thing Konecny is sure of, however, is that he's not placing all of the blame for missing playoffs on—you guessed it—the eight-game losing streak that occurred towards the end of the season.

"Those [losses] are just in a row," he said. "There's plenty of other losses throughout the year that you could look back on. It's magnified at that time of year. I think there was another one before the All-Star Break. I think there was. You could probably go back and look at all the different games and say would’ve, could’ve, should’ve. We put ourselves in a spot to have a chance and it didn't go our way."

The season might not have ended the way the Flyers had hoped, but the level of play displayed since October gave fans hope that maybe this rebuild wouldn't take as long as they initially thought, especially considering how GM Danny Briere stated that it was ultimately the players who would determine how quickly the rebuild happened.

Konecny doesn't have a crystal ball, but he does have a pair of eyes, and he can see the steps taken and lessons learned this season indicate that his team is headed in the right direction.

"I'd love to say right now that it's gonna be next year, [but] I don't know," he said. "You see the steps we took this year. Everyone's zero next year. We go through it again and see where we're at. I believe that this team could be great and be in the playoffs consistently every year. We have all the tools to do it. I think this year was good for us being in the spot we were at and learning the importance of not just the last couple games there. Going into next year, maybe it makes you realize that that nothing game on a Tuesday, random city—that game matters. And it's a good mindset for our team to have."

The strong foundation of team chemistry and togetherness are clearly already there (see: the player train/conga line Konecny was the conductor of at a morning skate back in January), but for the 27-year-old winger, it's just another day of being a Philadelphia Flyer.

"Honestly, ever since I've been drafted here [in 2015], I think it's just part of being a Flyer," he said. "Since I've come in, that's what they instilled in us, all the guys that were here, is you've got to get close off the ice and that's what builds it on the ice. All the players that have been there throughout have kept that going. Every single year I played here, it's been a great group and a lot of fun. This year is just another one of those years where it's an awesome group of guys and it was a pleasure playing with them all.

"I think it was awesome for a lot of the guys to prove a lot of people wrong and maybe even prove themselves wrong. Show themselves that we're capable of fighting with every other team, every other top team in the league. Now it's just believing, and we prove it to ourselves. You can go into the summer now working hard and have that eagerness and hungry attitude to get back at it and be right back to this spot as quickly as we can next year. We'll see where we're at again."

Another thing Konecny can go into the summer thinking about is the contract extension he's eligible for, but his mind isn't quite there yet.

"I'm sure down the road here, I'll deal with that," he said. "I haven't really. I've been focusing so much on trying to get in, but we'll see moving forward...I love Philly."
