Gary A. Vasquez-USA TODAY Sports - 3 Reasons the Flyers Should Acquire Zegras

The Philadelphia Flyers have been the center of attention this past week, after dealing former first round pick Cutter Gauthier to the Anaheim Ducks for Jamie Drysdale and a 2025 second-round pick.

Following the news, Trevor Zegras took time to reflect and express his emotions about losing a close friend and teammate in Jamie Drysdale.

"We pretty much do everything together. We pee together, we get injured together, we sleep together." Zegras told media.

Coincidentally, or unfortunately rather, Zegras was injured in his first game without Drysdale alongside him in a Ducks uniform. Initial reports say Zegras will be out "for a while" with a lower-body injury.

Anaheim Ducks general manager Pat Verbeek has reportedly mentioned Trevor Zegras to other organizations this season, and teams believe he may be available, sources told Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff.

A trade doesn't seem foregoing for the Ducks, and it's unclear how far conversations have progressed. Servalli added. TSN's Darren Dreger believes the Ducks are proactively trying not to shop Zegras.

In a perfect world, the Philadelphia Flyers may be one of a handful of teams looking into Zegras and looking to trade and sign the 22-year-old who will be an RFA in 2025-26. Here are some reasons why:

    Get The Band Back Together

It is no secret that Zegras and Drysdale had a little "bromance" going on between one another, but what if I told you there was a third?

Cam York is apparently very close with the two and they have attended country folk festivals together. Creating an interesting dynamic, almost the real life "Bash Brothers" with Kenny Wu from Disney's The Mighty Ducks, D2.

Not to bring in Zegras because they are all buddies. It would be good for the Flyers club to become even closer in the locker room and give Zegras an even greater chance to develop his game. The connection between the three is insurmountable.

There are some familiar faces in Philadelphia for Zegras. Dating back to the 2020, 2021 World Juniors, where Cam York and Bobby Brink played alongside Zegras. He and York built a strong relationship overtime, and Drysdale being a Flyer may sell Zegras on putting on a different orange and black. Building a culture is what the Flyers new regime is all about, put your money where your mouth is and acquire the lacrosse goal king.

    Center Depth

The Flyers are in desperate need of reliable depth down the middle, even in a crowded forward heavy pipeline. Their main focus right now is finding a true 1C after just losing out on a potential fix in Gauthier. Although the Flyers viewed him more as a winger.

Regardless, the club needs to find an answer. If they continue to play the way they are, it's almost impossible to find what you are looking for drafting at 20-25th.

Move out some lower-end prospects or an underachieving current forward to clear some space down the pike and regroup the top 9 to compete every night and build on a winning culture.

At 22 years old, Zegras still has a lot of room to improve and can realistically shine in Philadelphia. Under new management, familiar faces, and John Tortorella... This is a good thing.

    Tortorella Connection

John Tortorella and Zegras have an odd relationship that started in 2021 after Zegras scored a memorable goal with Sonny Milano. "It's tremendous skill," said Tortorella. "For Sonny Milano to even yell Michigan in the middle of a play in a game is a skill. That's a skill play. My position though is... is it good for the game? I'm not so sure."

"I'm not trying to be a fool here, but I'm just not so sure it's great for the game. If you did that back in the late 90s or 2000s, you would get your head taken off. It's cool to watch and all that, but I'm not so sure it's good for the game and I stand by that."

After those remarks, Tortorella and Zegras spoke to one another over the phone and pleasantries. Zegras thinks highly of Torts. "I was always a big Tortorella fan. Like that, he is outspoken and had his own opinion [on the goal]."

Tortorella took a stand and back tracked his earlier comments on the skilled goal from the two young kids in Anaheim.

“I live under a rock. I didn’t realize all of this was going on after the show,” Tortorella said on ESPN Thursday. "A coach in the league sent me an article yesterday and I read the article. And I saw what [Zegras] was going through as far as the questions that were being asked of him. My heart dropped because the furthest thing from my mind was criticizing this kid."

"That was a tremendously skilled play by a tremendously skilled player—both him and Sonny [Milano]. My thoughts were, ‘Is it a hockey play?’ And we can debate that all through here, agree or disagree, I’m not saying what is right or wrong."

Tortorella and Zegras may get along in The City of Brotherly Love. Time will tell and we will have to see if Danny Briere pulls the trigger on getting another Duck in the right orange.
