From Sam Ersson to Felix Sandstrom and Ivan Fedotov, the Philadelphia Flyers already have several promising young netminders in their prospect pipeline.
Now, they have another.
On Day 2 of the 2023 NHL Entry Draft, the Flyers traded up into the second round and selected Canadian goaltender Carson Bjarnason with the No. 51 overall pick.
The Flyers sent a 2023 fifth-round pick (No. 167) and one of their two 2024 second-round selections to the Chicago Blackhawks in order to move up to No. 51.
It should be noted that the Flyers will acquire a second-round compensatory pick in the 2024 draft after choosing not to sign 2018 first-round pick Jay O'Brien to an entry-level contract.
Bjarnason, who turns 18 on Friday, was ranked No. 1 on NHL Central Scouting's list of top North American goaltenders.
The Manitoba native measures in at 6-foot-3 and 190 pounds, making him the biggest goalie in the Flyers' prospect pool aside from Fedotov.
Bjarnason played in 47 games for the Brandon Wheat Kings of the Western Hockey League last season, logging three shutouts, a 3.08 goals against average, and a .900 save percentage. He also won a bronze medal with Canada at the 2023 U18 World Championship.
