Penguins' Sidney Crosby Tallies 1,000th Assist
The Pittsburgh Penguins captain adds his name to another historic milestone. PITTSBURGH – Sidney Crosby has already put his name among legends with multiple milestones and records during the 2023-24 season, but the Pittsburgh Penguins captain added another notch to his belt. With an overtime-winning play against the Red Wings, the 36-year-old tallied his 1,000th career assist.  The assist came on a pass to Erik Karlsson, sealing a much-needed win for their playoff efforts. Over his 19-year career, Crosby has become known for his playmaking ability and is just the 14th player in NHL history to reach 1,000 helpers. Crosby is now just 33 behind all-time Penguins legend Mario Lemieux. Crosby hasn't shown any signs of slowing down and is approaching even more milestones with each passing game. This season, he's added 46 to his career total.  The Penguins superstar added his name to the top 10 all-time scorers list on the same night, tying Phil Esposito with 1,590. This season, he's accumulated 46 assists.  Make sure you bookmark Inside the Penguins for the latest news, exclusive interviews, breakdowns, and so much more. Penguins' Sidney Crosby Joins Top 10 Scorers List
The Pittsburgh Penguins captain hits another historic mark. PITTSBURGH -- Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby is finishing off a stellar season by entering another elite list. With two points against the Detroit Red Wings, the star forward has tied Phil Esposito as the 10th-leading scorer in NHL history.  Crosby brought his career total to 1,590 points, with 591 goals and 999 assists. This season, he's totaled 41 goals and 47 assists.  Crosby appears to have plenty of life left in his NHL career and could continue moving up the all-time scorers list pretty rapidly. With his 1,590 points, he now trails Joe Sakic (1,641) by 51 points. When he reaches that mark, he'll then be just 82 goals behind fellow Penguins legend Mario Lemieux (1,723).  With Crosby's placement in the top 10, the Penguins now have four members with he, Lemieux, Ron Francis (5th) and Jaromir Jagr (2nd). Those who round out the list include Steve Yzerman (1,755), Marcel Dionne (1,771), Ron Francis (1,798), Gordie Howe (1,850), Mark Messier (1,887), Jagr (1,921), and Wayne Gretzky (2,857) The two-time Hart Memorial Trophy and three-time Stanley Cup champion continues to cement his place as potentially the greatest hockey player of all time. At 36 years old, he appears to still be headed upward. Make sure you bookmark Inside the Penguins for the latest news, exclusive interviews, breakdowns, and so much more. Ref Leaves Penguins Game on Stretcher
A terrifying moment took place during the Pittsburgh Penguins game. PITTSBURGH -- A scary moment took place during the third period of the Pittsburgh Penguins versus Tampa Bay when referee Steve Kozari left on a stretcher following a hit.  Kozari collided with Lightning defenseman Haydn Fleury near the center ice and lay motionless afterward. He stayed down for several minutes as the training staff rushed onto the ice to treat him. He was eventually taken off on a stretcher.  The ESPN broadcast confirmed that Kozari did have "a moment of unconsciousness" but was able to move all extremities as he was being taken off the ice.  Play eventually resumed with Tom Chmielewski as the single referee and then two line judges. At the time, Pittsburgh led 4-2 over the Lightning. They went on to win 5-4 despite a late-game push by Tampa Bay in the final period.  There has been no update on Kozari since the game ended. Inside the Penguins will continue to provide more information as it becomes available. Jake Guentzel Trade: Penguins Getting Huge Return
The Pittsburgh Penguins are looking at multiple additions with their Jake Guentzel trade. PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Penguins are looking to make a splash trade by the deadline, moving Jake Guentzel to another team for what should be a massive return.  The expectation is that a trade should happen rather soon, and with the deadline quickly approaching, general manager Kyle Dubas is likely working the phones trying to collect the best deal for their superstar forward.  But what will the Penguins get in return for Guentzel? Our own Nick Horwat spoke with The Hockey News Pre-Game Show and said the return could include both a first-round pick and some top-tier prospects as Pittsburgh looks to start building for their next run at a Stanley Cup.  "I know Dubas want prospects to come in. They want guys who can help, not a rebuild necessarily, but start that transition to building a winning team here," Horwat said. "I'm assuming a first-round pick would be part of it just because they should be building for the future, but when it comes to the prospects, they're going to want one or two names who can help the lineup for the rest of the year and mostly into next year." Guentzel has been linked to teams like the Las Vegas Golden Knights and Vancouver Canucks, with a move coming as early as today.  As for the rest of the team, Horwat believes making multiple moves could be tough now that the team is back to playing hockey. And after not making any trades following a disastrous road trip this past week, expectations may be limited for any other acquires.  "It'll be hard to make a ton of changes in the next few days unless Kyle Dubas has a bunch of phone calls ready to be made," Horwat said. "They had a complete day off yesterday, and I was pretty much expecting that to happen yesterday with how bad that road trip was. But no movements other than Matthew Phillips getting placed on waivers, and maybe that is a precursor to the amount of moves that are coming. "Other than the core of [Sidney] Crosby, [Geno] Malkin, [Kris] Letang, [Erik] Karlsson - you can add [Bryan] Rust in there for a full no-move. ... [Marcus] Petterson might be in that conversation as well with the Penguins wanting him to stay. And for the goaltending, Jarry might be in conversations, but Dubas would have to be blow away for Jarry to be moved. Other than that, everyone it seems is up for moves." Penguins Playoff Chances Take Major Jump Heading Into Final Stretch
The Pittsburgh Penguins are closing in on their 17th consecutive playoff birth. PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Penguins once had less than a 1% chance at making the postseason, but after a win over the Washington Capitols and losses by the New York Islanders and Florida Panthers in regulation, the team is nearing the definite spot in the playoffs.  As of now, the Penguins sit at the top of the wild card race - which is coming down to three teams. Midweek, Pittsburgh had roughly a 40% chance of making the playoffs. After a successful weekend, they're now looking at an 82.2% chance, according to MoneyPuck.  The Penguins have eight regular season games remaining and currently hold a three-point lead over the Panthers. Florida currently has a 32.4% chance of making the playoff, according to MoneyPuck.  If Pittsburgh pulls off another postseason push, they'll make the dance for the 17th consecutive season.  Make sure you bookmark Inside the Penguins for the latest news, exclusive interviews, breakdowns and so much more! Penguins Trade Teddy Blueger to Golden Knights
The Pittsburgh Penguins acquire a defenseman for centre Teddy Blueger. The Pittsburgh Penguins are sending Teddy Blueger to Las Vegas in a trade with the Golden Knights, the team announced.  The Penguins are receiving defenseman Peter DiLiberatore and a 2024 third-round draft pick for Blueger in the two-team trade. Blueger scored just his second goal of the season this past weekend but has been the topic of trade discussion as his struggling season hit never seemed to redeem itself.  "We are grateful for everything that Teddy has done for this team and the organization over the past 10 years," Penguins general manager Ron Hextall said. "He was one of our most reliable penalty killers and a consummate professional. We wish him nothing but the best going forward." DiLiberatore is just 22 years old and has played for the Savannah Ghost Pirates and Henderson Silver Knights this season. Penguins to Make History, Wear LGBTQ+ Jerseys Before Stars Game
The Pittsburgh Penguins will show their support during pride night. PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Penguins are making history. For the first time in the franchise's history, the team will wear rainbow patches in support of the LGBTQ+ community during their warmups ahead of their match with the Dallas Stars.  The jerseys will then be auctioned off during the game and the money will go to benefit You Can Play, supporting the belief athletes should be judged on talent, heart, and work ethic, not sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, and the Hugh Lane Wellness Foundation.  Teams from across the league are celebrating pride month with warmup jerseys showing their support of the LGBTQ+ community. The Penguins will also wrap their sticks in rainbow tape before the game.  Penguins President of Hockey Operations Brian Burke and his son, Patrick, helped launch the You Can Play Project in 2012. Penguins Kris Letang Starts Skating Again After Stroke
The Pittsburgh Penguins get a positive update on Kris Letang. PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Penguins got some very positive news during their practice as Kris Letang did some skating.  Letang is currently out of the Penguins' lineup after suffering his second stroke. According to he and the team, he's feeling fine and does not have any major lasting effects from the incident.  Now, according to head coach Mike Sullivan, Letang actually did some skating while the team was practicing. It doesn't mean he's on his way back, but it's certainly a sign of encouragement that he could make his way back onto the ice. "He's in good spirits and continues to make progress," Sullivan said. Letang said after the stroke that he's hoping to return "soon". Pittsburgh has ruled him out indefinitely, but with each update, optimism grows that he will be back with the team. Evgeni Malkin Brought to Tears Over Penguins 1,000th Game Night
It was a storybook night like no other for the Pittsburgh Penguins star. PITTSBURGH -- It's a milestone only two members of the Pittsburgh Penguins have reached, and in fairytale fashion, Evgeni Malkin made the most of it.  Before, throughout and after the Penguins' win over the Calgary Flames at PPG Paints Arena, the team celebrated Evgeni Malkin's 1,000th career game. He's the 32nd active player and the 373rd all-time to hit this milestone. He's just the 65th player to play those 1,000 games with one team, and only the 8th Russian-born player to hit the mark.  The Penguins honored Malkin with a silver stick and a pre-game video highlighting his career. They then shared clips throughout the game of his time with Pittsburgh, and messages from loved ones and former teammates/opponents paying their respects.  "I think it’s like, amazing life… I’ve played with lots of guys, amazing guys. They support me," Malkin said. "I moved to America 17 years ago. I have so many good friends here, you know? It was an amazing night for me, for my family. Thank you to my teammates." Malkin said he's cried for the last three nights before of all the joy this moment has brought him.  In the shootout, head coach Mike Sullivan said there was something in his gut telling him Malkin should shoot the final puck. He did, and made it, ending the special night in perfect fashion.  Something that feels like you can only write about it.  "Amazing night for me, for my family. Thank you to my teammates. The Pittsburgh Penguins are a special organization," Malkin said. "It’s a special night; special gifts before the game. No words for this night. It’s amazing." Penguins Win Shootout Thriller on Evgeni Malkin's Special Night
The Pittsburgh Penguins beat the Flames exactly how they should've. PITTSBURGH -- A fairytale ending for the Pittsburgh Penguins came with a tight race to the finish line. The Penguins took no time to get on the board after Jan Rutta put it in the back of the net off an assist from Jeff Carter with 17:51 left in the opening period.  Evgeni Malkin tried to add another goal to the period as he found himself behind the net with the puck, landing an assist to Bryan Rust. After the Flames used a coaching challenge, refs determined it was offside, canceling out the goal.  The assist would've been fitting on the night the team honored Malkin for his 1,000th game.  The period ended 1-0 Penguins.  The second period started off slow, but the Flames finally found the board. With 11:23 on the clock, Dillon Dube bounced the puck past Tristan Jarry for Calgary's first goal, tying the game, 1-1.  The Penguins failed to add to their total in the second as the two teams went into the third tied at one. The third period didn't provide much scoring, but it did have the largest impact from the crowd. With roughly six minutes remaining in regulation, the refs called tripping on Malkin, sending him to the box. And for the next six minutes, the fans let them know it was a bad call.  When the Flames had the puck, thunderous boos filled the arena. When the Pens cleared it, cheers shook PPG Paints.  And tied at one apiece, this Thanksgiving Eve game headed into overtime.  Three-on-three hockey never fails to disappoint, and with two minutes remaining in the OT period, Sidney Crosby got hit with a powerplay. Penguins held the advantage after a hooking call.  The powerplay could not prevail as the overtime period ended, 1-1.  Time for a shootout.  Calgary shot first, but with no success. Pittsburgh shot second, sending Rickard Rakell out. And just like that, the Penguins had an advantage.  Tristan Jarry held strong on attempt two, giving Sidney Crosby a chance at the net. The captain never disappoints and put Pittsburgh up 2-0.  The Flames got on the board, making their first shot of the shootout. Followed by a Jake Guentzel miss.  Jarry gave the Penguins a chance to win, and of course, Malkin skated onto the ice.  And as it should've been, gave the Penguins the win.  Pittsburgh moved to 10-7-1 on the season. Penguins Honor Evgeni Malkin With Pre-Game Video
The Pittsburgh Penguins continue to celebrate Evgeni Malkin's 1,000th game. PITTSBURGH -- Before the Pittsburgh Penguins dropped the puck for their Thanksgiving Eve matchup with the Calgary Flames, the team celebrated a historic milestone for one of the franchise's most beloved players.  Just days after Evgeni Malkin played his 1,000th game, the Penguins returned home and honored their centre with a pre-game video ahead of puck drop at PPG Paints Arena.   Malkin is just the second player to play 1,000 games for the Penguins, the first being Sidney Crosby. He's the 32nd active player and the 373rd all-time to hit this milestone. He's just the 65th player to play those 1,000 games with one team. Of players with 1,000 games under their belt, Malkin ranks 15th in points (1,166) and 2nd in wins (584).  He's also just the 8th Russian-born player to hit the landmark. Report: Penguins Looking to Trade PO Joseph
The Pittsburgh Penguins are making it know PO Joseph can be moved. PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Penguins are reportedly ready to move on from PO Joseph as they look to finalize their blue line.  According to the Daily Face Off's Frank Seravalli, Penguins general manager Ron Hextall has made it known that the team is willing to trade Joseph.  "I’m keeping a close eye on the Pittsburgh Penguins and their blueline, and that’s because last week Penguins general manager Ron Hextall sent a note to his 31 counterparts, letting them know that Pierre-Olivier Joseph is available via trade, and that’s just part of their process that they’re going through on their back end," Seravalli said.  At the same time, he believes the Penguins could be in a situation a little tighter than they're making it out to believe. Seravalli says Pittsburgh is giving off the feel that they are in a numbers crunch and may be bluffing about wanting to trade Joseph because of excess talent.  Instead, they may be looking at whether or not they need to cut players to free space. "The Penguins have a decision to make," Seravalli said. "Are they going to be keeping P-O Joseph or are they going to put Chad Ruhwedel on waivers, Mark Friedman? Those are the guys in that mix for that 6-7 or 7-8-9 spot in the Penguins organization. P-O Joseph is just one name to keep an eye on that has been out there in trade talks over the last week." Joseph has competed with Ty Smith all summer for the blue line job.  Make sure you bookmark Inside the Penguins for the latest news, exclusive interviews, breakdowns and so much more! Colorado Avalanche Continue to Beat Up Stanley Cup
The Stanley Cup might not make it back to the Colorado Avalanches trophy case. The Colorado Avalanche might have broken the record for quickest time between winning and denting the Stanley Cup, but that destruction hasn't stopped.  Everyone remembers Nicolas Aube-Kubel stumbling as he carried the cup towards the team photo, falling and denting the bottom of the team's biggest prize.  Well, that continued. After the Avalanches parade, the team partied - as usual - and ended up in a night club with the beloved Stanley Cup. And once again, a member of the team stumbled, for different reasons this time, and the cup hit the floor.  If anything, the Stanley Cup is proving to be durable. And it's not like it's anything new for a team to bring it out and beat it up a little. Penguins' Filip Hallander Highlights Crazy Day Before First NHL Game
Sheetz for a pregame meal and getting the call on the ninth hole. What a day for Pittsburgh Penguins' Filip Hallander. PITTSBURGH -- Filip Hallander didn't know he was getting the call up to the NHL when he started his ay on April 7. He went golfing, and as fate would have it, got the call from the Pittsburgh Penguins as he entered the ninth hole.  Hallander left and headed back to his apartment, where he changed into his suit, packed a bag and headed off, he told the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins media. And on his way to the game, he made sure to stop at Sheetz for a pregame meal.  "It was pouring down and there was a lot of traffic coming into New York. We got to the tunnel at like 5:10. Usually you get to the rink at like 4:40." Hallander said he had troubles finding the tunnel and had no idea where he was going.  "We were just circling around Madison Square in one-lane traffic for like 35 minutes," Hallander said. "He was such a nice guy, my driver. He looked back at me and he's like, 'You're not in a rush, are you?'" And to make matter worse, he broke his skate the day prior. But looking back, it might've helped. It all worked out in the end. "I'm coming in with a broken skate, no pregame meal," Hallander said. "But I think it helped. I didn't think too much." Penguins GM Calls Out Rangers' Intentional Hits During Playoff Series
The Pittsburgh Penguins lost key players because of hits they believe were dirty. PITTSBURGH -- Weeks later, the hit on Pittsburgh Penguins' Sidney Crosby from New York Rangers' Jacob Trouba is still being talked about. And like many others within the organization, general manager Ron Hextall believes it was not a clean blow.  Hextall was asked by Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Mike DeFabo about the hit to Crosby's head in Game 5 that left him absent for the next matchup. "I think there was intent," Hextall said. "And I think it's arguable whether there was intent to injure or it was just intent to let him [not] get to the net." The Penguins GM also pointed to another blow that got overlooked during the series. This one being an elbow to Jake Guentzel.  "That one was pretty bad. I felt like there was some intent there," Hextall said. "As a league, we have to continue to talk & evaluate where we are with headshots, because it's an issue that's prevalent in sports. We need to continue to move forward." The Rangers' blows throughout the series left Pittsburgh without Crosby for a game and Rickard Rakell out for nearly the entire series. Not everyone agreed that it was intentional, but the Penguins organization certainly did.  Make sure you bookmark Inside the Penguins for the latest news, exclusive interviews, breakdowns and so much more! Penguins in Contract Talks With Evgeni Malkin, Kris Letang
The Pittsburgh Penguins want to keep Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang on the roster. PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Penguins have a lot of decisions to make with their free agent pieces, but at the top of their to-do list is re-signing Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang.  According to general manager Ron Hextall, the two sides continue to talks, and have had conversations as recent as the last few days about new deals.  "We would like to sign both players," Hextall told Penguins media. "I think you look at individually, they've both been here for 16 years. Geno has obviously been a great player. Certainly, one of the best players in the history of the game. We'd like to keep him a Pittsburgh Penguin for the rest of his career. In a perfect world, Geno retires a Penguin. Tanger is the same." This comes after the team inked Bryan Rust to a six-year deal, kicking off their free agent signings. They have 11 players left to negotiate.  Hextall and the Penguins staff believed this year's team was capable of bringing home another Stanley Cup to Pittsburgh. He also said the two sides agree that the talent level is there to win a championship with this roster.  "We felt like we were in it, and had a good enough team where we could've gone on a run here," Hextall said. "Obviously in the end you've got to get it done. But our plan is to continue on trying to win the Stanley Cup." And a part of that is making sure they keep their stars around - starting with Malkin and Letang. "These two, they're generational players," Hextall said. "They don't come around very often. We would like to keep them here through the en of their careers. Obviously, we have some issues in areas we have to work through in terms of salary cap. Everything has to match up. It's a puzzle right now. ... We'll continue to work with both guys and, hopefully, come to agreements with them at some point."
