Pittsburgh Penguins' fans, Team Canada, and the rest of the world held its collective breath on Wednesday when captain Sidney Crosby went down the runway during the second period of Canada's Olympic quarterfinal matchup against Czechia.
Crosby did not return, and it was revealed later that he sustained a lower-body injury and would receive imaging in Milan on Thursday to determine the severity of his injury.
Well, at this point, there is no official word on the results of that imaging. But, despite that, Team Canada head coach Jon Cooper is not about to pull the plug just yet on Crosby's availability for the rest of the tournament.
According to NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman, Cooper said Thursday that he's "not ruling out Crosby for the tournament, not willing to give a definitive answer on his status yet."
Crosby, 38, appeared to have been injured after absorbing a few hits: one by Czech defenseman Radko Gudas in the neutral zone, and one by forward Martin Necas that ended up with Crosby sandwiched between Necas and another Czech player. Crosby went off the ice favoring his right leg, was briefly attended to by trainers, and went to the dressing room under his own power but using his stick for some support.
Playing in his third Olympic games, Crosby is Canada's all-time leading scorer (16 points) for Olympics in which NHL players have participated in, and he broke that record in Canada's 10-2 win over France on Sunday.
Team Canada next plays Friday against Finland in the semifinals, while Team USA will take on Slovakia. The results of those games will determine the gold medal game, which will take place at 8:00 a.m. ET on Sunday.
