Pittsburgh Penguins players weigh in on one of the biggest holiday questions facing the human race

On Fridays during the 2024-25 season, The Hockey News - Pittsburgh usually spotlights a Penguins' player through a rapid-fire Q&A session using "get-to-know" questions.

This week, I did things a little differently. With the holidays upon us, I asked some Penguins' players one of the most controversial holiday cinema questions in human history:

Is Die Hard a Christmas movie?

Here's what they had to say:

    Tristan Jarry: Haven't seen it.

Kris Letang: I've never seen it, so I don't even know.

Phil Tomasino: I actually haven't seen it, but I would consider it probably not because I know it's an action movie. That's the one with Bruce Willis, right?

Yeah, there's a lot of debate about it being a Christmas movie. Yeah. Well, I've never seen it, so I can't give an answer, but based off of the knowledge I have about it, I would say probably not.

Alex Nedeljkovic: I don't think I've seen it, to be honest with you. But it's kinda like Harry Potter, right? Like, yeah, there's Christmas in it, but is it really, like, a Christmas movie? I don't know.

Cody Glass: Hmm... Kinda, I guess? It's placed in Christmastime, right? Would I watch it on Christmas or would I say it is? Probably not. Just cause it's Die Hard. But, no, I think of Christmas movies as, like... that's also, like, Harry Potter... Is Harry Potter a Christmas movie? I always get that question a lot, too. But, I'd say no. I'd go more Elf, The Santa Claus... those type of movies. I don't know. People can say it's a Christmas movie. I don't want to offend anybody, I don't want to get cancelled for my take on Die Hard.

Well, honestly, it's been so split in here. Like, it's on TV, I've seen it on TV during December as, like, a Christmas marathon-type thing, and I found it kinda weird, so... but, a lot of people, they do like Harry Potter during December, they always do the Harry Potter marathons, and I'm like... it's kinda odd to me.

Yeah, it's Christmas for, like, five minutes in each movie. I know! I'm just, like, 'Okay, we can watch that movie... all three hours of it...

Anthony Beauvillier: I don't know, I saw it a long time ago. I know the debate's out there, but I would have to rewatch Die Hard to tell.

Owen Pickering: I've seen it, and I don't really understand why it would be a Christmas movie. But, some of my buddies think it is, so I'm kind of torn. I just don't really get it. I didn't watch it with the mentality that it was a Christmas movie. It was more just, like, explosions and stuff with some Christmas stuff in it.

Bryan Rust: I haven't watched it in a very long time, but I'd have to say "yes."

    Rickard Rakell: N'Yeah.

    Just 'N'Yeah'? ...N'Yeah.

Michael Bunting: I do think it is. I was just talking about that the other day, that Die Hard is one of the top Christmas movies...

    Drew O'Connor: No, I don't think so.

Kevin Hayes: Yes, for sure. All the way. John McClane's the man.

Noel Acciari: They are celebrating a Christmas party, so... it's technically the holiday season... but I think I saw something way back that said it wasn't a Christmas movie. It is set in the Christmastime, they're having Christmas holiday party, so, I'd have to go against that and say it's a Christmas movie.

Sidney Crosby: Ooh. I'll say 'no.' Yeah. I'll go 'no.'

    Jesse Puljujarvi: Yes. Yes. Yes.

Nathan Clurman: Oh yeah. All the way. You need a little action movie around Christmas.

Matt Grzelcyk: I think it is, yeah. I mean, it doesn't really have that much "Christmas" in it, but everyone watches it around this time, so I would think it would be, yeah.

Ryan Graves: I've actually never seen Die Hard. So I have no idea. (To Ryan Shea): Do you?

Ryan Shea: No. It's a really good movie, but just because it happens when it's snowing out and it's at Christmas time, I don't think it's a Christmas movie.
