The winningest goalie in Pittsburgh Penguins history continues to be one of the most lovable players in the sport.
The greatest goalie in Pittsburgh Penguins history is now 38-years-old and still chasing down all-time records, but he made a splash without even making a save.
Marc-Andre Fleury is loved by more than just Penguins fans and ahead of Native American Heritage Night with the Minnesota Wild, he has a special goal mask made for the occasion.
The NHL, however, stepped in and blocked Fleury from donning the mask in warmups thanks to their recent decision to ban specialty items like jerseys and equipment on theme nights.
Despite the NHL threats of fines towards both Fleury and the Wild, the league’s third winningest netminder wore the mask on the ice during warmups.
The mask was designed by Cole Redhorse Taylor and featured multiple pieces to honor Fleury’s family, including his wife who is of native decent.
At first, after Fleury was notified of the NHL’s ruling, he was disappointed, but planned on wearing it anyway and intended to pay the fine.
According the Fleury’s agent Allan Walsh, the league caught wind of Fleury’s decision and threatened an even bigger penalty against the team.
Regardless of threats and fines, Fleury wore the mask during warmups against the Colorado Avalanche.
The NHL set their policy before the season began, but according to ESPN’s Greg Wyshynski, they may not even fine Fleury or the Wild for the mask, despite an obvious display of violating the policy.
The move by Fleury to wear the mask has been applauded by many across the hockey world as he sticks it to the NHL and their policy special items.
Fleury did not play in the game and the Wild lost to the Avalanche 3-2.
