NHL Blocks Former Penguins Goalie From Wearing Special Mask

The all-time great Pittsburgh Penguins goalie is unlikely to wear a special mask made for a special night.

The Pittsburgh Penguins continue to struggle on the man advantage, dropping to 25th in the NHL.

Marc-Andre Fleury is one of the most beloved Pittsburgh Penguins of all time, and even multiple teams later, he’s still pushing as one of the greatest goalies of all time.

The all-time Penguins great is catching headlines, but not for his rise up the NHL record lists.

Rather, the NHL has blocked Fleury from wearing a specially made goalie mask as part of the Minnesota Wild’s Native American Heritage Night.

The mask was made by Cole Redhorse Taylor and has multiple nods to Fleury’s family, including his wife, Veronique, who is native decent.

Prior to the start of the season, the NHL banned teams and players from wearing specialty jerseys and equipment during theme nights.

That ban has included theme nights like military appreciation, pride celebrations, and even their own Hockey Fights Cancer initiative.

Fleury was going to wear the mask any and pay whatever fine the league may hand him, but according to his agent, Allan Walsh, the NHL is adding to the punishment if that happens.

According to Walsh, the league would hand a significant fine to the Wild if Fleury was the wear the mask.

The mask is now up for auction with bids already exceeding $5,000.

UPDATE: Fleury defied the warnings and donned the mask for warmup against the Colorado Avalanche.
