The Pittsburgh Penguins are looking for reinforcements with the addition of Jesse Puljujarvi.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have struggled out of the gates to start the 2023-24 season and are quickly looking for reinforcements.

It was announced that forward Jesse Puljujarvi has joined the Penguins on a free agent tryout.

A free agent tryout works just about the same as a professional tryout, but since it's the middle of the regular season there are some small limitations.

The player can take part in all of the team's practices, skates, and other team events, but cannot play in a game.

The team also covers the expenses for 10 days but a decision does not need to be made by that time.

Puljujarvi is a 25-year-old former fourth overall pick of the Edmonton Oilers, and entered the league with great promise.

Injuries and other factors derailed his progression as a regular NHL talent forcing him out of the 2019-20 season completely.

Puljujarvi has been without a contract due to recovery from double hip surgery over summer; he was recently cleared for practicing with contact and aimed for a December return to NHL action.

Over parts of six seasons in the NHL, Puljujarvi has played in 334 games with 51 goals and 63 assists for 114 total points.

At this point, he may not be much of a goal scorer or playmaker, but he could be an extremely useful piece for the Penguins bottom six.

Standing at 6-foot-4, 201 pounds, Puljujarvi provides size and isn’t afraid to use it; in the last three seasons combined he’s recorded 321 hits.

The Penguins need all the help they can get and this could be an extremely smart pickup by Kyle Dubas.
