The All-Star break is just about here and Kyle Dubas wants to give the Pittsburgh Penguins more time.
PITTSBURGH – The last time Kyle Dubas spoke to the media, he said he would give the Pittsburgh Penguins until about the NHL All-Star break to decide on what direction to take the team. Dubas said he was still trying to learn about the group and get a read on where the Penguins are heading, both this season and seasons beyond.
The Penguins have two games remaining before the break, and it seems like Dubas plans on waiting a little longer to make those decisions.
According to Chris Johnston on TSN’s Insider Trading, Dubas is going to give the Penguins more time and continue to watch to see what direction is right for the team.
“Some might remember that Kyle Dubas said he was going to wait until the All-Star break to evaluate what direction he would go with the team,” Johnston said. “In reaching out to him on this day, it seems as though that wasn’t a hard deadline.”
It looks like Dubas will continue his evaluations of the Penguins beyond the All-Star break, giving the team more time to find a rhythm. Since Dubas gave the note about the break, the Penguins are 10-5-3 but still sit far out of a playoff spot.
“Dubas, even after the two games to end the first half for the Penguins this week is going to keep watching beyond that point,” Johnston said. “He insists that his team will make decisions for him in terms of their performance.”
Johnston believes Dubas and the Penguins won’t have clarity on the direction for at least another week, maybe even two weeks. The trade deadline is about six weeks away, giving the Penguins a fair amount of time to really come up with a plan.
The Penguins aren’t completely out of the fight but have a tough battle ahead of them. Dubas seems willing to help by making them buyers at the deadline, but it’s up to the players to show they deserve that.
