The Pittsburgh Penguins seem likely to make changes to their power play, and there's no limit to what they could be.
It’s been said before, and it will continue to be said until something finally gives, but the Pittsburgh Penguins continue to be held back by their power play.
In the first half of a home-and-home with the Philadelphia Flyers, the Penguins went another complete game without a goal from their man advantage units.
This pushed the power-less play to scoreless in their last 10 games and 29 attempts in that span.
In those 10 games, the Penguins hold a 4-4-2 record and the lack of production on the power play has cost them on multiple occasions.
The Penguins not only went 0-5 against the Flyers, but they failed with an opportunity in overtime and allowed a short handed goal at a crucial point of the game.
With the power play percentage continuing to dive, head coach Mike Sullivan is ready to explore anything and everything to find even a little success.
“We’re going to certainly consider everything,” Sullivan said. “We have to find a way to get better and make improvements.”
The Penguins have tried making small changes over the course of the season, but the units the way they are constructed right now aren’t working.
Sullivan sounds willing to make a number of changes, and not just with the players on the ice.
“I don’t think we can keep anything off the table,” Sullivan said. “As far as personnel groups, or tactics, or whatever.”
If the Penguins can find even league average rhythm with their power play group, they can be one of the better teams in the NHL.
At 5-on-5, the Penguins are one of the best teams, and Sidney Crosby continues to be a difference maker at even strength.
Their penalty kill is top-10 in the NHL and are being helped along by a surging goaltending duo of Tristan Jarry and Alex Nedeljkovic.
Sullivan noted that Kris Letang is a veteran and has quarterbacked the Penguins power play for the better part of a decade.
It’s very well possible his move back to the top unit is near the top of the list of changes that may be coming.
The Penguins desperately need the power play to find footing and it seems they’re ready to give anything a try at this point.
