Pittsburgh Penguins record five goals in final period to secure their second win in as many nights.
The Pittsburgh Penguins looked to carry the momentum from their first win of the season by capping off their first back-to-back of the season against the Calgary Flames.
Following the win over the Washington Capitals, goaltender Alex Nedeljkovic was given the nod between the pipes to make his Penguins debut.
It didn’t take long for the Flames to test Nedeljkovic in his new sweater by taking an early lead in shots on goal and some good applied pressure.
Nedeljkovic was able to stand tall and keep the pucks out of the net as the intensity between the two teams rose.
The Penguins and Flames traded penalties forcing about eight minutes of special teams play.
Despite the open ice, it was the goalies who stood tall; Jacob Markstrom specifically made a couple of huge saves.
The first period would come to an end with a total of 10 penalty minutes between the two teams and no goals.
Pretty low-event hockey was played between both teams for a good majority of the second frame, but the Flames carried much of the momentum.
The Flames were rewarded for their play driving with a power play goal from Matt Coronato and his first point in the NHL.
It didn’t take long into the third period for the Penguins to get that goal back as a strong power move from Sidney Crosby helped create a behind-the-bet chance for Bryan Rust.
Before fans could even settle from the Rust goal, Reilly Smith picked up his second goal in as many game to put the Penguins on top 2-1.
It took the Penguins just 41 seconds into the third period to go from down one to up one.
After a slow first two periods, the Penguins really came alive to start the final frame as Jake Guentzel got in on the action with his first goal of the season.
A set play off of a face off win set up Guentzel perfectly for the tally.
With time beginning to winding down, Evgeni Malkin found twine to give the Penguins a little extra insurance.
That insurance became necessary as the Flames picked up their second of the night with just under four minutes to play.
The Flames pulled Markstrom with all kinds of time left, but neither team wanted to capitalize for another goal.
It took a while, but Rust finally broke through to put home the empty net tally and give the Penguins a 5-2 win.
With games on back-to-back nights, the Penguins have certainly shown that the lousy home opener was just a minor hiccup to start the year.
