Former Pittsburgh Penguins forward Adam Johnson has passed away following a freak accident with his EIHL team.

After hours of waiting for confirmation, the Nottingham Panthers of the Elite Ice Hockey League (EIHL) have announced that former Pittsburgh Penguins forward Adam Johnson has passed away.

Johnson was 29-years-old and played with the Penguins between 2018 and 2020; his passing comes following a freak accident that occurred during a Panthers game against the Sheffield Steelers.

A collision at center ice saw Johnson take a skate blade to the neck; medics were rushed to Johnson’s side on the ice.

Fans were eventually asked to leave the arena and no further update on his condition was given until the following morning while the proper people were notified.

The Panthers announced Johnson’s passing sending their condolences to family, friends, and loved ones and stated their next couple of games have been postponed.

The EIHL stated all games for October 29 will be postponed, as well.

Johnson was playing in his first season in the EIHL after signing with the Panthers this past summer.

During his time with the Penguins organization, Johnson appeared in 13 games and recorded four total points.

A Minnesota native, Johnson’s only career goal came against the Minnesota Wild.

The Penguins released a statement of their own mourning the loss of Johnson and stating he will always be a part of their family.

Johnson joined the Penguins as an undrafted college free agent in 2017.
