After another huge win, the Pittsburgh Penguins are now among the favorites to reach the postseason.
PITTSBURGH – For the first time since mid-November, the Pittsburgh Penguins are holding down a playoff spot. The Penguins have strung together standings points in eight straight games, including an active four-game winning streak.
Thanks to the recent success, and a few key losses, the Penguins sit in the Eastern Conference’s second wild card spot. There is still plenty of hockey to be played, but the Penguins hold their own playoff destiny.
According to moneypuck.com, the Penguins’ win over the Tampa Bay Lightning has elevated them to a 39.7% chance of clinching a playoff berth. Just a few weeks ago, the Penguins were staring down dark times with just a 1.3% chance.
39.7% pushes the Penguins over the Detroit Red Wings, Washington Capitals, and Philadelphia Flyers.
It was a loss from the Flyers that helped the Penguins’ percentage take such a jump. With the Flyers recent stretch getting worse, they hold a 26.3% chance of reaching the postseason.
The Capitals sit ahead of the Flyers with 33.7% odds, and the Red Wings aren’t too far ahead with a 37.6% chance.
The only Eastern team ahead of the Penguins in odds is the New York Islanders, who now have a 60.4% chance. The Islanders secured a crucial win over the Nashville Predators to move into third place in the Metropolitan Division.
The Penguins have made up their ground with a possible record-breaking run. If they find their way into the postseason, Sidney Crosby is expected to move way up in the MVP discussion. Two spots remain open in the East, and the Penguins are right there after months of doubt.
