The Pittsburgh Penguins look to gain momentum as they continue their California road trip.
The Pittsburgh Penguins broke free from their three-game losing streak, lighting up a putrid San Jose Sharks team for 10 goals in the process. The Penguins picked up a desperately needed victory, and are hopeful they can ride that momentum to improved play.
Their latest challenge comes in the form of a rematch with the Anaheim Ducks. The Ducks won these teams' last matchup on a game winning goal in the final seconds of the third period. The Pens are eager to exact their revenge, so here's what to watch for as the Penguins continue their road trip in California.
1. Smith is Soaring
Reilly Smith has looked like an incredible addition to the Penguins, and he's solidified his place in the team's top six in just 10 games. He has 11 points to start the year and he looks like the ideal running mate for Evgeni Malkin.
Smith's contributions have been especially noticeable on the power play. He already has three power play points since being elevated to the first unit. But what really stands out since he's joined the first unit is how comfortable he looks occupying the top half of the left wing side. He has poise, excellent vision, and a cannon of a shot. Put it all together, and it seems like he was the missing piece to jump start the Penguin's stagnant power play.
Smith looks to continue his hot run against Anaheim.
2. Mighty Mason
Amongst the glut of young talent in Anaheim, Mason MacTavish is standing out to start the season. The third overall pick in 2021 is coming off of a career-best season at just 20 years old, putting up 17 goals and 43 points. His start to the year indicates he may be taking another step in his progress. With 13 points in 11 games, MacTavish is looks like the cream of the Ducks' crop. The Penguins will need to keep an eye on him if they want to avoid losing another game to Anaheim.
3. Fourth Line: Fluke or Turning Point?
When you win a game 10-2 like the Penguins did in San Jose, it's easy to overreact and assume all problems are erased. One of the specific areas this is the case is the team's fourth line. Against the Sharks, all three members of the line recorded a point. There's no doubting the line looked improved, especially with the addition of speedy and tenacious winger Vinnie Hinostroza in place of Jeff Carter.
However, what can this fourth line accomplish? Noel Acciari and Matt Nieto have been average at best to start their careers in Pittsburgh, but perhaps they are finding their stride after a rocky beginning. This game against a much more talented Ducks team will be a true test for the fourth line on both ends of the ice.
The Penguins and Ducks face off at the Honda Center at 10:00 p.m.
