The Pittsburgh Penguins return from a road trip to take on the surprising Arizona Coyotes.
Mired in a four game losing streak, the Pittsburgh Penguins are in search of a victory and a desperately needed confidence boost. Returning home from a quick road trip, the Penguins face another challenging test: the upstart Arizona Coyotes. Here's what to watch for in a cross-conference matchup between the Pens and Yotes.
1. Karlsson On Skid
The Penguins struggles have raged on and defenseman Erik Karlsson faces more unearned criticism. He hasn't helped his case recently, going three games without a point while the power play flounders. He continues to eat minutes and move the puck well, but it seems all positives are outweighed by the special teams failures.
Despite having 19 points in 26 games and logging 25+ minutes a night, the Pens need more from him. He'll need to have another offensive surge against the Coyotes, hopefully with the man advantage, to get the Penguins back on track.
2. Cooley's Homecoming
Pittsburgh has produced a handful of NHL talents over the years, but the area's most promising player has to be the Coyotes' rookie sensation, Logan Cooley. Taken third overall in his draft class, he bears resemblance to the player that gave him a chance to play in Sidney Crosby.
Both Cooley and Crosby are undersized but tenacious with the puck and possess lower body strength that defenders consistently underestimate. At just 19-years-old, he has 14 points through his first 26 games. He keeps improving and finding his stride in the NHL, and could breakout for a big game in front of his hometown crowd.
3. Puustinen Looking To Stick
Valtteri Puustinen made an impressive debut for the Penguins back in 2021, recording an assist. Two years later, he finally got another crack at the NHL and made quick work impressing again. Skating alongside Evgeni Malkin, he added another assist.
Poised to dress for his third NHL game against Arizona, he would become the first rookie to score in their first three games since Malkin himself did it back in 2006. With Puustinen's slick hands and quick offensive mind, it wouldn't be surprising to see him register another point playing on a top line. If he can continue to contribute, he could find himself sticking around in Pittsburgh while they look for depth production.
The Penguins and Coyotes face-off at 7:00 p.m. at PPG Paints Arena.
