The Pittsburgh Penguins are hoping a small adjustment to the power play can help push the team into a proper rhythm.

The Pittsburgh Penguins are hoping a small adjustment to the power play can help push the team into a proper rhythm.

With the addition of Erik Karlsson, the Pittsburgh Penguins should have one of the fiercest and successful power play in the NHL.

That hasn’t been the case through five games of the season as the Penguins have only been able to notch two goals with the man advantage.

Both scored by Sidney Crosby in the same game, the power play unit 15.38% success rate on 13 total opportunities.

After five games and not much offensive threat, head coach Mike Sullivan has made a small but possibly useful adjustment to the units.

Bryan Rust was bumped from the second power play unit to the first in place of Rickard Rakell.

One of the areas where the Penguins have lacked in the power play is a lack of pucks on net, Rust and his hot hand should help that situation.

Rust has started the season with four goals in five games and is off to a great start to his bounce back season.

Rakell, on the other hand, hasn’t been able to get much going in the early stages; he only has one assist through the fist five games, but has been firing the puck.

Both Rust and Rakell have recorded 15 shots on goal to start the year, which is tied for third most on the team, but it seems obvious that Rust is finding his finish.

Rust is tied with Evgeni Malkin for the team lead in goals and should bring more juice to the power play.

The Penguins are in need of a jump and without yet making any rash decisions, and this small adjustment to the power play could snowball into so much more.
