The Pittsburgh Penguins head to Detroit to take on the Red Wings.
The Pittsburgh Penguins rattled off back-to-back wins this past weekend, vastly outplaying both of their competitors in the process. Entering the fourth game of the young season, the Pens are looking to bring that same type of play into Little Caesars Arena when they take on the Detroit Red Wings.
Both teams have identical 2-1-0 records through three games, and both have plenty to prove this season. Here's what to watch for when the puck drops between the Pens and Wings.
1. Malkin Making Magic
It's only three games in, but Evgeni Malkin looks like his vintage self through the first few games. He's been an offensive dynamo in the early goings, finding immediate chemistry with new linemate Reilly Smith. Together, their line is producing fantastically, with each scoring two goals. Malkin earned the NHL's Third Star of the Week by putting up six points to start the season. Against Detroit, watch for Geno to continue his early run of offensive production.
2. Jarry Moves Up Team Records
With his shutout victory over the Capitals, Tristan Jarry won his 118th career game. That win catapulted the polarizing goaltender ahead of Matt Murray for the third highest win total in team history.
After signing a new five-year, $25 million contract this offseason, Jarry is looking to cement himself as a true all-star goaltender. His first two games have shown flashes of his brilliance, but he is still looking to find consistency in his level of play. He'll need another solid start to keep his momentum building this season.
3. Will the Third or Fourth Line Score?
The bottom six in Pittsburgh is brand new this season, so there is still an adjustment period in process. That being said, the third and fourth lines have done very little to instill confidence in their offensive depth. Among all six forwards, they collectively have one point: a lone assist registered by center Lars Eller.
With the season being so new, it isn't time to push the panic button. However, there's no denying the bottom six needs to find any way to produce offense. The game against the Red Wings is a pivotal early season chance to get the offensive depth on the correct path.
The Penguins and Red Wings face-off at 7:30PM at Little Caesar's Arena.
