Penguins vs Red Wings: Depth Returns to Lineup

The Pittsburgh Penguins are entering their most important battle of the year with the return of a depth forward.

Sidney Crosby discusses how the Pittsburgh Penguins have been able to find consistency in the past few weeks.

PITTSBURGH – The Pittsburgh Penguins are in for their biggest test of the season against the Detroit Red Wings. It’s not the hardest game they’ve played all year, but the Penguins and Red Wings are battling for their playoff lives.

With four games remaining in the season for the Penguins, this contest is without doubt a must-win. The Penguins made a few roster moves prior to the biggest game of the year, and are hopeful for positive outcomes all around.

Forward Lines

Drew O’Connor – Sidney Crosby – Bryan Rust

The Penguins recently voted Sidney Crosby as their MVP and just by looking at the numbers, it couldn’t be anyone else. Crosby leads the team in goals, assists, and points, and is one of the main reasons they are this close to a playoff spot. With the importance of this matchup through the roof, Crosby is sure to be the center of attention.

Michael Bunting – Evgeni Malkin – Rickard Rakell

Evgeni Malkin has been a monster on home ice since his parents returned to Amercia for the first time in nearly half a decade. In the last two games played at PPG Paints Arena, Malkin has scored four goals. He’ll look to keep that hot streak alive with the season likely on the line.

Reilly Smith – Lars Eller – Valtteri Puustinen

Lars Eller missed the most recent practice with illness, and was listed by Mike Sullivan as a game-time decision. The official lineup announcement has confirmed that Eller will play in his usual spot.

Radim Zohorna – Jeff Carter – Emil Bemstrom

The Penguins are giving Jesse Puljujarvi the night off in favor of the recently recalled Radim Zohorna. This will be Zohorna's first game since mid-January. The Penguins are hopeful the sizable forward can provide a boost to their depth while playing a smart defensive game.

Vinnie Hinostroza was also recalled from the American Hockey League, but will be healthy scratched with Puljujarvi.

Defensive Pairs

P.O. Joseph – Kris Letang
Marcus Pettersson – Erik Karlsson
Ryan Shea – Jack St. Ivany

Prior to puck drop, the Penguins moved Ryan Graves to long-term injured reserve, putting an end to his season. This group of defenders is likely how things will look until the season is over or another injury gets in the way.

Starting Goalie

Alex Nedeljkovic

For the 10th straight game, Alex Nedeljkovic has been handed the keys as the Penguins starting goalie. In a must-win situation against his former team, Nedeljkovic will look to continue his trend of stellar performances.
