The Penguins can add an offensive defenseman by drafting Cole Hutson.
PITTSBURGH-- The Pittsburgh Penguins haven't made their draft priorities public, but it's believed they are targeting a defenseman with one of their second-round picks. That strategy could pay off for the Penguins, with multiple defenders projected to be available when the team is on the clock. One of those players is Cole Hutson out of the United States National Team Development Program (USNTDP)
Position: Defenseman
Height: 5'9
Weight: 165 pounds
Shoots: Left
2023-24 Team: USNTDP
THN Draft Ranking: 71st
Scouts doubted Cole's older brother Lane during his draft year and he fell to the Montreal Canadiens in the second round. The Penguins should not make the same mistake with Hutson if he is on the board in round two. He is an undersized defensemen in the mold of the modern NHL, drawing comparisons to players like Quinn Hughes.
Hutson has the toolkit to become a PP1 quarterback. With a smooth skating stride, an excellent passing ability, and a keen awareness in the offensive zone, he averaged a point per game with the USNTDP this past season.
The big issue with Hutson is the defensive side of the game. He's not a problem or liability in his own end, but he will need time to adjust to the size and strength of the professional ranks.
NHL Player Comparison: Torey Krug
NHL ETA: 2026-27
Hutson will be playing at Boston University in the fall, and he figures to play there for at least a few seasons before making the jump to the AHL or NHL. He will need a couple seasons to bulk up and add strength, as well as round out the defensive aspects of his game. Once he does, he could become a high-end second pairing or possible first pairing defenseman.
