PITTSBURGH – The Pittsburgh Penguins are looking for ways to improve their roster, and a high-level scorer might be available. According to Darren Dreger on Insider Trading, the Winnipeg Jets are taking calls on Nikolaj Ehlers.

Dregger didn’t say many teams that may have interest, but the Penguins should be among the suitors. Ehlers is a 28-year-old winger who can easily fill a void in the top six left open by Jacke Guentzel.

Ehlers is a consistent goal scorer, posting over 20 tallies in seven of his nine years in the NHL. In 605 career games, Ehlers has 201 goals with 256 assists. Those numbers would fit nicely on Sidney Crosby’s left side while he enters the final days of his career.

Crosby needs another weapon on his wing, and Ehlers may be the perfect counterpart. Bryan Rust likely won’t be taken off Crosby’s right side, and that’s fine; Rust is solid. But, Drew O’Connor finished the 2023-24 season on Crosby’s left.

O’Connor is a great player, but Crosby needs someone like Ehlers to see the offense explode in a truly pivotal year.

Set to enter the final year of his contract, Ehlers makes $6 million against the salary cap. He’s a pricy player, and a trade would be tough, but he makes perfect sense for the Penguins. If Kyle Dubas and the Penguins front office are hunting for big names, Ehlers should be near the top of the list.
