Pittsburgh Penguins look to break the mold of their season.
The Eastern Conference remains a tale of two groups, and the Pittsburgh Penguins remain entrenched in a battle for the bottom seeds. Consistency has been the Penguins' issue, but they'll have an opportunity to correct that course this weekend.
The Penguins have had only two win streaks of three or more games this season. In November, they won five straight between their California road trip and a pair of home games against non-playoff teams. The second was at the end of December when they defeated the New York Islanders twice, with a win over the St. Louis Blues in between.
Their inability to string together wins has landed them in a dogfight for playoff positioning. With a hectic month of March and the oldest team in the NHL, it's never too early to start forming better habits.
Last season, the Penguins entered a similar March schedule inside a playoff spot but finished the season 10-10-2 and missed the postseason. They are on the outside looking in of the playoffs and desperately need to improve their current standing before the calendar flips to March.
The Penguins head north to Minnesota and Winnipeg on a two-game win streak. A successful road trip would not just close the gap in the standings but prove that the Penguins are building on their momentum for the first time in 2024.
