PITTSBURGH – The Florida Panthers have a 2-0 series lead over the Edmonton Oilers in the Stanley Cup Final, and a former Pittsburgh Penguins forward has reached another level. Evan Rodrigues scored a goal in Game 1 but just one-upped himself with a pair of tallies in Game 2.
With the score tied at 1-1 in the second frame, Oilers defenseman Evan Bouchard attempted to make a soft clear, but the puck ended up right on Rodrigues’ stick. Rodrigues made a quick adjustment with the puck and fired a perfectly placed shot over Stuart Skinner.
The goal gave the Panthers a 2-1 lead and eventually became the game-winner. Rodrigues wasn’t done with just the go-ahead tally; he added insurance early in the third period.
The Oilers were chasing history by killing off 34 straight penalties, just five shy of the playoff record. They seemed ready to make it 35 straight when the Panthers struggled to get set on an early third-period power play.
Off of a rush chance in the final seconds out of man advantage chance, Rodrigues re-directed a hard pass to end the Oilers’ streak.
Rodrigues’ efforts earned him first-star of the game honors. He’s the only player on either team to score in both games of the Final. Rodrigues also became the first Panthers player to ever have a multi-goal game in a Stanley Cup Final match.
The Panthers went on to win 4-1 and took a commanding 2-0 series lead as the teams head to Edmonton.
