Another loss means more shrinking to the Pittsburgh Penguins playoff chances.
PITTSBURGH – The Pittsburgh Penguins suffered another defeat away from PPG Paints Arena, pushing their road losing streak to seven games. More than just another losing streak starting to grow, the Penguins are yet to see much positive news for their playoff odds.
According to moneypuck.com, the Penguins' loss to the Dallas Stars has decreased their playoff odds to 2%. This is a new low for the Penguins, but barely, as their previous low point was 2.5%. Until they are mathematically eliminated, the Penguins plan on continuing the fight for the postseason.
No one has waived the white flag in Pittsburgh, but it might be time. With 13 games remaining and sitting nine points out of the second wild card, the Penguins would need to play perfect hockey and get a ton of outside help.
The Penguins are off on Saturday, but just about every team in the running for a playoff spot with them plays and can put more distance between each other.
The Detroit Red Wings hold the second wild card spot with 78 standings points but not the highest odds of making the playoffs (38.2%). That distinction goes to the Washington Capitals (48.6%), who are one point behind Detroit with a game in hand.
A bit of a gap forms between the Capitals and the following closest teams. The New York Islanders hold 73 points but again have lower odds (8%) than the team right behind them. The New Jersey Devils (12%) have 72 points and an extra game played over the Islanders.
The Buffalo Sabres (2.6%) are a point behind the Devils with 71 but have played an extra game. Then the Penguins finally file in with 69 points in 69 games.
No teams in the Eastern Conference have been mathematically eliminated from playoff contention, but things are getting close.
