After two playoff games, former Pittsburgh Penguins goalie Casey DeSmith is out with an injury.
PITTSBURGH – The Vancouver Canucks are already known as the Pittsburgh Penguins of the Western Conference, but they seem to be taking things to another level. After their starting goalie, Thatcher Demko, went down with an injury, it was up to former Penguins backup to carry the load in goal.
After two games as the Canucks starter, DeSmith has suffered an injury of his own. First reported by Frank Seravalli, the Canucks are starting their third-string netminder Arturs Silovs in Game 4 against the Nashville Predators.
All Seravalli said was that DeSmith is now also dealing with an injury and they will start their third goalie in the first four games of the playoffs. Before puck drop, Canucks head coach Rick Tocchet did not have details as to what may be ailing DeSmith.
There is no further information on DeSmith’s injury and how long he will be absent is not known. DeSmith was interfered with by Predators forward Michael McCarron, a play which McCarron was fined for, but DeSmith didn't miss any time and practiced the next day.
In his two starts, DeSmith picked up a win and a loss giving the Canucks a 2-1 series lead over the Predators. DeSmith allowed three goals in Game 1 and just one in Game 2. He holds a .911 save percentage.
The Canucks entered the postseason as a possible Stanley Cup favorite, but if they are down to their third-string goalie, things could get dicey.
