The Pittsburgh Penguins have reportedly hired David Quinn to replace Todd Reirden.

PITTSBURGH – With just a couple of weeks until the 2024 NHL Draft and the opening of free agency, the Pittsburgh Penguins are starting to fill their coaching vacancies. A report from Arthur Staple of the Athletic has stated David Quinn will join the Penguins coaching staff as an assistant.

Quinn is filling the role left open by Todd Reirden's firing by the Penguins in early May. After two seasons as their head coach, Quinn was recently let go by the San Jose Sharks. From 2018 to 2021, Quinn was also the head coach of the New York Rangers.

Quinn joins the Penguins organization with extensive familiarity with multiple key figures. Most notably, Quinn is a long-time friend of head coach Mike Sullivan. The two played college hockey together at Boston University and have stayed close ever since.

In his first season with the Sharks, Quinn coached current Penguins defenseman Erik Karlsson. The 2023-24 season wasn’t bad for Karlsson, but it fell short of expectations. A familiar face behind the bench may add a new dimension to Karlsson’s second season in Pittsburgh.

Before the Penguins let Reirden go, Quinn emerged as a front-runner for this position. His relationship with Sullivan and Karlsson, paired with his experience as a head coach, made him a prime candidate for the opening.
