Pittsburgh Penguins forward Jake Guentzel became the fastest player of the 2013 draft class to reach 200 goals.
The Pittsburgh Penguins kicked off their three-game California road trip with a dominating 10-2 win over the San Jose Sharks, but one of those goals was a milestone achievement.
Jake Guentzel kicked off a five-goal period for the Penguins, but even bigger for himself, it was his 200th career goal.
Not only did Guentzel become just the eighth player in franchise history to reach 200 goals, he did it in fewer games than anyone else in his draft class.
Guentzel was taken 77th overall in the 2013 NHL Draft, and has hit 200 goals in only 463 career games played.
Since being taken first overall in 2013, Nathan MacKinnon is known for his goal scoring ability, but it took him 552 career games to reach 200.
Ever since breaking into the league during the 2016-17 season, Guentzel has emerged as one of the best, yet most under-appreciated players in the game.
Guentzel’s 200th goal in his 463rd game also makes him the sixth fastest Penguins player to hit the milestone.
Only Mario Lemieux (277 games), Kevin Stevens (363) Sidney Crosby (369), Jaromir Jagr (412), and Evgeni Malkin (417) reached the number faster.
Guentzel wasn’t overly proud of his 2022-23 season, and hasn’t had the most memorable start to the 2023-24 season goal scoring wise.
He did, however, follow up his 200th goal with one more in the thumping of the Sharks.
