The Pittsburgh Penguins are expected to be without Reilly Smith long-term.
PITTSBURGH – Reilly Smith was an early exit from the Pittsburgh Penguins lineup in their overtime loss to the Vancouver Canucks. After taking a heavy hit in the first period, Smith only played one more shift before being ruled out for a return.
Penguins’ head coach Mike Sullivan said following the contest that Smith was being evaluated for an upper-body injury and he did not have any updates at that time. The Penguins held an optional practice the following day and Smith was not present.
Sullivan stated that Smith was still being evaluated but he is expected to be out ‘longer-term.’ Smith played just a handful of shifts against the Canucks before He recorded just over three minutes of ice time.
Smith hasn’t had an outstanding year as the Penguins reach the 41-game mark; in 40 games played, Smith has scored eight goals and 12 assists for 20 total points. Only two of his goals have come over the last 30 games.
Sullivan recently dropped Smith from the second to third line in hopes something could spur his production and wake up his offensive ability.
