The Pittsburgh Penguins fought back, but ended up on the wrong side of history on Elias Pettersson's overtime winner.
PITTSBURGH – The Pittsburgh Penguins put up a valiant effort to crawl back from a multi-goal deficit against the Vancouver Canucks, but ultimately lost in overtime. The overtime goal not only sealed a second standings point for the Canucks, but the goal scorer created a little history with it.
Elias Pettersson, who factored in on all four of the Canucks’ goals, became the first player in NHL history to score four straight game winning goals on the road. For his tally against the Penguins, he caught a stretch pass and had half of the ice to work with on a breakaway.
Pettersson’s shot slipped through Tristan Jarry’s just barely beating him five-hole for the game winner.
“He just had enough room to make a deke left to right,” Jarry said. “He was able to keep pushing it and was able to get around me.”
Pettersson’s other road game winners have come all on the same road trip. The Canucks are now on a four-game winning streak, thanks in large part to Pettersson’s heroics. His goals have come against the New Jersey Devils, New York Rangers, and New York Islanders.
Of Pettersson's four game winning goals, the tally against the Penguins was the only one to occur in overtime.
Over that four-game stretch, Pettersson has posted seven goals and five assists for 12 points as the Canucks climb the ranks as one of the best teams in the NHL. They sit just one point back of the Winnipeg Jets for top team.
