Penguins Lose Trade Partner for Jake Guentzel

The Pittsburgh Penguins are down a dance partner in a possible Jake Guentzel trade.

Edmonton Oilers defenseman Philip Broberg is emerging as a throw-in option for the potential Jake Guentzel trade.

PITTSBURGH – Pittsburgh Penguins forward Jake Guentzel has been one of the most talked about players available as the NHL trade deadline approaches. Numerous teams have been linked, and perfect landing spots have been discussed.

With so many teams reportedly in on Guentzel, however, there are bound to be teams that drop out of the running. According to NHL insider Frank Servalli, the Edmonton Oilers are likely out of the Guentzel sweepstakes.

Seravalli joined Oilers NOW with Bob Stauffer and said the Oilers likely don’t have what it takes to take a swing at Guentzel.

“I don’t really think Jake Guentzel is an option,” Seravalli said. “As a pure rental, I don’t see them being in that mix. First off, they can’t afford him, and second, I don’t think he would want to re-sign in Edmonton anyway. In pencil, cross him off the list.”

Seravalli and many others have labeled the Oilers as buyers, but whoever they acquire likely won’t be able to stay past the 2023-24 season. They are already spending to the salary cap ceiling and don’t have the space to give out any raises.

The Penguins were previously linked to young Oilers’ defenseman Philip Broberg, possibly as part of the Guentzel package.

With the Oilers likely out as trade partners, the Penguins will have to look elsewhere for a deal. Even without the Oilers, a large handful of teams are still in the Guentzel race.
