The Pittsburgh Penguins face the Flyers for a rematch in Philadelphia.

The Pittsburgh Penguins face the Flyers for a rematch in Philadelphia.

The Pittsburgh Penguins and Philadelphia Flyers needed a shootout to decide the first of their set of home-and-home matchups, with the Flyers securing the extra point. The Penguins looked lackluster throughout the contest, and needed some last minute heroics from Jake Guentzel to force overtime.

The rivalry now shifts to Philadelphia for another contest between the Metropolitan Division's fiercest rivals. Here's what to watch for as the Penguins and Flyers battle once again.

    1. Power-less Play

Has there ever been a more miserable stretch of power play failure in the Sidney Crosby era? The Penguins would probably choose to forego the man advantage if given the option due to their season failures.

They laid another egg in their loss to Philadelphia, going 0-for-5 and surrendering a shorthanded goal to boot. The skid on the power play has stretched to an 0-for-26 run in the past 10 games. The team has no answers either, with head coach Mike Sullivan and players continue to echo the same sentiments of needing to be better but not knowing exactly how to shake it up. With another heated divisional matchup ahead, the Penguins will only find ways to move up the standings if they can figure out their power play struggles.

    2. Sanheim's Progress

The Flyers made a huge offseason move when they parted ways with defensive anchor Ivan Provorov. Filled with misfortune on defense, Philly has turned to Travis Sanheim as their new number one defender. He's answered the call and then some as the top guy.

The former first round pick has the statistics to back up the Flyers' belief as well. He's twice scored 30+ points, has four seasons of 20+ points, and is off to a career best pace with 16 points in the first 24 games of this campaign. Averaging 25+ minutes a game so far, the Pens will see a ton of Sanheim in their rematch.

    3. Dubas' Addition Disappointing

Erik Karlsson, Reilly Smith, and Alex Nedeljkovic have been wonderful additions to the Penguins' organization. Each has contributed mightily already and look like shrewd moves for a contending team to make.

There has been one stand out disappointment so far: Ryan Graves. The big ticket free agent this summer has noticeably struggled in his first season as a Penguin. The adjustment from New Jersey's system to Pittsburgh is steep, with the teams playing incredibly different styles. However, the main reason Graves was signed was to replace Brian Dumoulin alongside Kris Letang. In the team's first quarter of the season, the pairing has shown flashes of chemistry, but has looked questionable the rest of the time. The Pens need more from Graves, and another matchup against his new team's heated rival could benefit the defender.

The Penguins and Flyers face-off at the Wells-Fargo Center at 7:00 p.m.
