Report: Penguins Place Tristan Jarry on Trade Block

According to a report, the Pittsburgh Penguins are looking to move on from starting goalie Tristan Jarry.

Pittsburgh Penguins' center Evgeni Malkin should be a first-ballot Hall of Famer.

PITTSBURGH – The Pittsburgh Penguins recently re-signed netminder Alex Nedeljkovic, who essentially stole the starting role from Tristan Jarry down the stretch of the 2023-24 season. With Nedeljkovic signed for another two years, many questions started to be asked about Jarry’s future in Pittsburgh.

Is Jarry going to be traded? Are the Penguins running it back with a Jarry/Nedeljkovic tandem? What does this mean for prospect netminder Joel Blomqvist?

The first question regarding Jarry being on the trade block may have been answered. According to Elliotte Friedman on the 32 Thoughts Podcast, Jarry is likely available for a trade.

“If you’re looking for a No. 1 goalie, you’ve got [Linus] Ullmark, and you’ve got [John] Gibson, and who else is available right now?” Friedman said. “I landed on Jarry… I wonder if he is in play out there, too.”

Jarry can be a starting goalie in the NHL with solid numbers throughout his NHL career. In 257 career games, Jarry holds a 136-85-25 record with a .912 save percentage. Health has always been an issue for him, but he has also failed to step up in crucial situations.

In the past two seasons, the Penguins have missed the postseason by just a couple of wins, and some of their worst losses have come with Jarry in goal. Nedeljkovic gave the Penguins a shot down the stretch with 13 consecutive starts, but they fell just short.

Jarry has four years left on a contract that earns him over $5 million annually. He is a pricy player, but it’s possible the Penguins get a fair return. His numbers aren’t bad, and he’s still under 30. The Calgary Flames received a first-round pick and a solid player for Jacob Markstrom, who is older and definitely doesn’t have the same numbers.

The Penguins have decisions to make between the pipes, and they’ll have to make them soon, with the NHL Draft just days away.
