Losses continue to pile up for the Pittsburgh Penguins as their playoff odds shrink again.
PITTSBURGH – Through the first half of their contest against the Colorado Avalanche, the Pittsburgh Penguins looked like a team ready to go on a miraculous run to the postseason. The Penguins were up 4-0, with their captain Sidney Crosby contributing to each goal.
Despite the early domination, the Penguins let the Avalanche storm back to win 5-4 in overtime. The Penguins took an overtime loss point for the standings, but that is far from enough to keep them in the playoff picture.
According to moneypuck.com, the Penguins' odds of making the playoffs are still above zero, but just barely. Money Puck gives the Penguins a 1.5% chance of reaching the postseason.
The losses continue to pile up for the Penguins in one of the most crucial months of the season. Their loss to the Avalanche extended their road losing streak to eight games as they’ve gone winless outside of PPG Paints Arena in March.
In 13 games in March, the Penguins hold a 3-8-2 record and have gone from a team with an outside shot of making the playoffs to one eyeing the upcoming Draft Lottery.
The teams around them in the playoff picture also continue to make their push. The Washington Capitals have won back-to-back games to put themselves in the second wild card spot and have a 57.9% chance of making the postseason.
Following the Capitals are the Detroit Red Wings, who are now a point back of the wild card and hold a 37.3% chance of making the playoffs. It’s turning into a two-team race for that wild card spot, with a large gap in odds separating the Red Wings and New Jersey Devils.
Money Puck dips all the way to an 8.5% chance for the New Jersey Devils and 5.3% for the New York Islanders. The Buffalo Sabres, with a 2.5% chance, pull in ahead of the Penguins as the only teams in the Eastern Conference still carrying odds above zero.
The Columbus Blue Jackets are the only Eastern team officially eliminated from playoff contention, but more should follow suit soon.
