The Pittsburgh Penguins take on the Winnipege Jets for the second time this season.

The Pittsburgh Penguins take on the Winnipege Jets for the second time this season.

PITTSBURGH— The Pittsburgh Penguins put up a strong effort but dropped the first game of their road trip to the Minnesota Wild. They must quickly turn their focus to the Winnipeg Jets they met a few nights ago. Here’s what to watch for as the Penguins play the second half of back-to-back games against the Jets.

    1. Jarry vs. Jets’ Offense

Tristan Jarry and the Penguins had their way with Winnipeg when the teams met just a few days ago. Jarry stopped 23 shots to earn his sixth shutout of the season. Facing a desperate Jets offense, will Jarry and the Pens’ defense gain the upper hand again, or will Winnipeg strike back?

    2. Jets Struggles Costing Them

The Jets were among the most surprising teams in the first half, but that hasn’t been the case since the All-Star Break. Winless in their last five games, including a shutout loss at the hands of the Penguins, the Jets are now three points out of first place in the Central Division.

Despite a comfortable grasp on their playoff position, Winnipeg must be concerned about their drop-off in play. The Penguins should expect a playoff-like matchup against a desperate team looking to snap out of their funk.

    3. Reilly Smith Breaks Slump

Despite their loss in Minnesota, the Penguins must be rejoicing about Reilly Smith's play. Subject to criticism and trade rumors lately, the veteran forward went nearly a dozen games without a goal. That all changed when he buried a one-time feed from Evgeni Malkin for his ninth goal of the season.

The team needs Smith to start scoring like the 20-plus goal scorer he is again to earn a playoff spot. Facing the Jets, the Pens are hopeful he can build on his performance in Minnesota and net his 10th goal of the season.
