Mark Pysyk might lose ground in his fight to earn a full contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

When the Pittsburgh Penguins signed defenseman Mark Pysyk to a professional tryout contract ahead of training camp, many believed he had a real chance of cracking the NHL roster.

Pysyk would have a lot of battling to work through to crack the Penguins roster, but he seemed ready for a successful comeback to the league.

The return to the NHL may be halted for Pysyk, however, as he was recently moved to the injured list.

The penguins announced their first round of cuts to the training camp roster and while Pysyk wasn’t removed from the team, he was grouped with the injured players.

Pysyk joins five other injured Penguins including Jake Guentzel, Owen Pickering, Raivis Ansons, Will Butcher, and Nolan Collins.

It is not clear what injury Pysyk is dealing with, but he did participate in the Penguins second of two preseason games against the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Pysyk completed the game and recorded a total of 18:32 of ice time in Columbus.

The veteran defenseman is looking to find his way back into the NHL after missing the entire 2022-23 season with an Achilles injury.

Of the five PTOs signed by the Penguins (with one cut already made) Pysyk arguably had the best chance to earn a full contract with the team.
