With uncertainty surrounding the Pittsburgh Penguins goaltending, Joel Blomqvist is getting a call to the NHL.
With the health of Tristan Jarry still uncertain, the Pittsburgh Penguins are taking steps to fill the goalie positions while he is out.
According to the NHL Media Site, the Penguins have recalled goalie prospect Joel Blomqvist from the AHL and placed John Ludvig on injured reserve.
Ludvig suffered a concussion in his NHL debut against the Dallas Stars, but was never removed from the active roster.
The Penguins are yet to make these moves official, but this seems like the likely direction.
Jarry left the last contest early with what seemed like an upper-body injury after being clipped by Anaheim Ducks forward Adam Henrique; almost immediately after the contact that knocked his mask loose, a puck struck Jarry in the head.
In the following days, Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan was never able to give a full update on Jarry’s status.
The most Sullivan could say is that Jarry was still being evaluated; while there is still no full confirmation, this roster move adds a touch of clarity to the situation.
Blomqvist getting recalled doesn’t quite mean he’ll see playing time as the Penguins will likely start Magnus Hellberg against the Los Angeles Kings.
In seven games played at the AHL level this season, Blomqvist holds a 4-2-0 record with a .920 save percentage.
The 2023-24 season is Blomqvist’s first year on North American ice.
