One of the most productive players against the Pittsburgh Penguins in Nicklas Backstrom is taking time away from the game.

In an unexpected twist to the early portion of the 2023-24 season, a key feature of one of the Pittsburgh Penguins biggest rivals is stepping away from the game.

Penguins rivals the Washington Capitals announced that center Nicklas Backstrom would be taking time off due to ongoing injury problems.

Backstrom missed significant time last season following hip resurfacing surgery; a procedure that commonly spells the end for athlete’s careers.

While this was not a retirement announcement from Backstrom or the Capitals, his future seems uncertain.

Backstrom stated that it wasn’t an easy decision to make and he is looking to determine the best steps moving forward.

In eight games played this season, Backstrom has only recorded an assist as the Capitals have struggled to start the year.

The Capitals have stated that they are supporting Backstrom through this leave of absence.

Backstrom has played 1,105 career games and recorded 271 goals and 762 assists for 1,033 total points.

Against the Penguins, Backstrom is over a point per game with 65 total points (11G-54A) in 62 games.

That split is tied for the most against any team with the Philadelphia Flyers.
