The Pittsburgh Penguins are 3-6-0 heading into November, but firmly believe they've shown more than that.

If you just look at standings points and their record, you would think the Pittsburgh Penguins have gotten off to a horrid start.

You’d be partially right considering the Penguins have only picked up three wins through their first nine games, but the team insists they’ve played better than what their record shows.

Head coach Mike Sullivan has said following multiple losses that the score didn’t quite indicate how the game felt.

The losses have bee discouraging, and the Penguins are finding ways to lose, but Sullivan stands by his team.

“When you look at the way the games are being played here,” Sullivan said. “There’s been significant amount of time that we’ve been the better team.”

Anaheim Ducks head coach Greg Cronin had a similar sentiment after their victory over the Penguins.

Cronin said that the Ducks didn’t have the drive or energy to match that of the Penguins, yet still came up with a win.

A number of the Penguins players also believe that they’ve played better than what the 3-6-0 record suggests.

“It looks worse than it actually is,” veteran Jeff Carter said. “We’ve played some really good hockey. Couple of games we weren’t at our best. For large portions of games, we’ve been carrying play.”

Carter says that all the team has to do is stick with their game and continue to generate the opportunities that they have.

Penguins captain Sidney Crosby understands that things look rough, but the team is staying positive and sticking to their game.

“We’ve had the right mindset,” Crosby said. “It’s discouraging, but I think the last few games haven’t gone our way. We felt like we did some good things. We keep coming back every game.”

In their last two losses, the Penguins put up 84 shots on goal to their opponents combined 53; Crosby himself had a career-high 11 agaisnt the Ducks.

The Penguins are getting their chances and are out-performing their competitors, but are coming up on the wrong side of the outcomes.

A few extra saves from Tristan Jarry would go a long way, but so would finishing on opportunities at a higher percentage.

The Penguins plan is to just stick with their game plan, and know things will start to click for them.
