Pittsburgh Penguins' Sidney Crosby sits atop a significant leaderboard after performance against Rangers.
If it feels like Pittsburgh Penguins' captain Sidney Crosby breaks a record every time he steps onto the ice this season, it's because he basically has. In fact, Crosby is a stone's throw away from making more history before the season concludes in a few weeks.
However, what Penguins fans witnessed last night was not just another run-of-the-mill milestone for the 19-year NHL veteran. Crosby's three points (2G-1A) pushed him to the 82-point mark and guaranteed his 19th point per game season, tying him with Wayne Gretzky for the most all-time.
Crosby has done it all in his career, including three Stanley Cup championships, two Olympic Gold Medals (including the Golden Goal in 2010), and countless other awards and milestones. While championships and gold medals outweigh most other achievements, Crosby's latest feat is his most significant individual accomplishment to date.
Tying Gretzky in anything is significant, but this record is the quintessential Crosby honor. It illustrated Crosby's consistent greatness over nearly two decades.
When you consider how much of Crosby's prime years got taken from him due to significant injuries, a lockout, and a worldwide pandemic, Crosby's ability to maintain this level of dominance is something rarely seen.
Without those roadblocks, Crosby would likely already be vying to catch Jaromir Jagr for second all-time in scoring. But his path to this milestone further highlights the excellence and drive Crosby has had his entire career.
Outside of surpassing Ron Francis to enter the top five all-time scorers list and anyone else he passes beyond that, this is the most impressive individual achievement of Crosby's career.
