Sidney Crosby continues to knock down milestones and achievements while keeping the Pittsburgh Penguins afloat.
PITTSBURGH – On the back of a three-point night in the Pittsburgh Penguins win over the New York Rangers, Sidney Crosby has tied Wayne Gretzky in one of the rarest achievements in NHL history. Crosby’s empty-net goal secured his 82nd point and locked up his 19th point-per-game season.
Between his rookie season in 2005-06 and with eight games left in the 2023-24 season, Sidney Crosby has never gone a year under a point-per-game. Even in seasons where Crosby missed significant time with injury, if he was playing, he was scoring.
Gretzky played 20 years in the NHL, and his only season under a point per game was his final one in 1998-99. Even then, he still scored 62 points in 70 games.
Crosby and Gretzky are in a league of their own when it comes to this specific statistic. Only they have exceeded 18 seasons and have the added level of consistency by doing so in consecutive seasons.
This level of consistency is not often seen in the NHL, and the Penguins have been blessed to have such a dominant figure for so long. Over his 19-year career, Crosby has scored 587 goals and 997 assists for 1,584 total points.
With eight games remaining in the season, Crosby isn’t done, as multiple milestones are within reach. Crosby is three assists back from becoming the 14th player in NHL history to hit 1,000 helpers. He is also just six points away from cracking the top 10 of all-time scoring.
Crosby will have a lot to work for in 2024-25. Not only will he be pretty close to 600 career goals, but he’ll look to surpass Gretzky and become the first player in NHL history to record 20 point-per-game seasons.
