The Pittsburgh Penguins have added to their depth by signing a former Detroit Red Wings goalie out of Europe.
PITTSBURGH – The Pittsburgh Penguins are adding to their stable of young goalies with a fresh face out of Europe. The Penguins have announced the signing of 25-year-old goalie Filip Larsson from Leksands IF of the Swedish Hockey League.
Larsson is signed to a two-year contract that will last through the 2025-26 season. In 28 games with Leksands in the 2023-24 season, Larsson picked up a 19-9-0 record with a 1.93 goals against average and .920 save percentage.
Larsson was drafted by the Detroit Red Wings in the sixth round (167th overall) of the 2016 NHL Draft, but never played in the NHL. Between 2019 and 2020, Larsson played 17 total games in the Red Wings minor league system.
Larsson played a year of college hockey at the University of Denver in 2018-19 and picked up a 13-6-3 record.
While he has spent the last five seasons playing in Sweden, Larsson does have some experience with North American hockey and will likely begin his Penguins tenure somewhere in the system.
The Penguins are likely to see some changes to their goaltending situation this offseason, and Larsson may be stepping in as another young depth option.
