The Pittsburgh Penguins have been searching for moves all week, and J.T. Miller was a big target.
The NHL trade deadline is just hours away, but teams across the league, including the Pittsburgh Penguins have already made their moves.
One move that fell through for the Penguins, however, was one that had Ron Hextall making a big push for some high powered offense.
According to numerous reports earlier in the week, Hextall was in talks with the Vancouver Canucks regarding Brock Boeser and J.T. Miller.
While the Boeser conversations eventually ended, Miller remained on Hextall’s radar.
It seems that Hextall has since backed away from Miller, as well, with TSN’s Darren Dreger stating that those conversations have come to an end.
Dreger said that Hextall made a ‘hard run’ at Miller, but the Canucks weren’t willing to take the offer.
The Canucks had their eyes on a center, but Hextall was only willing to give up draft picks.
Vancouver also believes that they aren’t in a rebuild and look at Miller as an important piece to their future.
Miller has a seven-year, $8 million contract that doesn’t start until next season; that would have been a hefty price for Hextall and the Penguins to pay and it’s probably best they missed out on him.
Hextall, however, liked what he saw and was looking to add something to the Penguins to help make them a better team.
Instead of Miller, Hextall has added Mikael Granlund and brought back Nick Bonino as depth options for the final leg of the season.
